Yesterday, while debating the Omnibus spending bill, the U.S. Senate took up Senator Roger Wicker’s (R-Miss.) amendment to preserve what has become fairly commonplace in federal budgeting, the prohibition of U.S. taxpayer money being used through the United Nations to underwrite China’s one-child policy in which women are coerced into having abortions and are forcibly sterilized. Unfortunately, the Senate defeated this amendment by a vote of
55-39, with three Democrats, Senators Robert Casey (Penn.), Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), and Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) supporting the pro-life amendment. The Omnibus is frozen in the Senate right now due to fiscal considerations coming from a surprising corner–the Democrats’ side. Please call the
following Senators to thank them for their stance supporting American taxpayers: Senators Evan Bayh (Ind.), Russ Feingold (Wis.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), Mary Landrieu (La.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.), Mark Begich (Alaska), Mark Warner (Va.), Amy Klobuchar (Minn.), Mark Pryor (Ark.), Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), Bob Casey (Penn.), Blanche Lincoln (Ark.), and Joe Lieberman (Conn.).
On a different pro-life subject in the House, Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) led a Special Order on Wednesday night in which he and nine other pro-life members–Reps. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.), Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.), Randy Forbes (R-Va.), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), John Fleming (R-La.), Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.), Michele Bachmann (R-Minn), and Mark
Souder(R-Ind.)–hailed the latest adult stem cell successes and breakthroughs in getting embryonic–like stem cells without using human embryos. Even today we learned of researchers who have turned ethically created cells into the neurons that break down in Parkinson’s disease. This follows news of successful treatment of a Parkinson’s patient with his own adult stem cells. As these members argued, stem cell advances have moved beyond the embryonic stem cell debate. Congress should support positive legislation such as the Forbes/Lipinski Patients First Act rather than go along with the Obama Administration in funding the unethical and ineffective research on embryos.
“The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. … I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere.” —Thomas Jefferson
“Are you willing to spend time studying the issues, making yourself aware, and then conveying that information to family and friends? Will you resist the temptation to get a government handout for your community? Realize that the doctor’s fight against socialized medicine is your fight. We can’t socialize the doctors without socializing the patients. Recognize that government invasion of public power is eventually an assault upon your own business. If some among
you fear taking a stand because you are afraid of reprisals from customers, clients, or even government, recognize that you are just feeding the crocodile hoping he’ll eat you last.” —Ronald Reagan
“(W)hen a strict interpretation of the Constitution … is abandoned, and the theoretical opinions of individuals are allowed to control its meaning, we have no longer a Constitution; we are under the government of individual men, who for the time being have power to declare what the Constitution is, according to their own views of what it ought to mean.” — Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Curtiss, March 6, 1857, dissenting from the Dred Scott ruling that slaves were property
